National Mapping of Youth Arts Provision – Are You On the Map?

Are you involved in youth arts in youth work settings? Make sure your work is counted in the first ever mapping of arts in youth work ([link removed]) settings. We are delighted to be partnering with University College Cork on this important piece of work for the sector. Census week begins Monday 27th January, and as a subscriber, you'll have an opportunity to take part.



** NYCI Welcomes Saturday Vote

As an organisation that has been campaigning for weekend voting since 1999, we welcome the fact that the upcoming General Election on February 8th is to take place on a Saturday, a move we believe will support many young people to cast their vote. ** NUI Certificate in Global Youth Work and Development Education - applications now open!

The new NUI Certificate in Global Youth Work and Development Education is a Level 8 award delivered by NYCI in partnership with the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. This course will be of interest to anyone looking to develop knowledge and skills in the areas of global youth work and development education practice in youth settings. ** Practice Perspectives on Empathy in Youth Work
------------------------------------------------------------
Empathy is considered an important part of wellbeing and personal development and reflective practice. Using empathy as a case study, NYCI will explore how the youth work sector can engage with young people through the lens of arts, health, development education, inclusion and child protection, and explore how a range of outcomes can be achieved within the same project. ** ‘Young People, Youth Workers and Consent’ - let us know your thoughts

NYCI with support from the School of Psychology in NUI Galway, is developing training on consent to support youth workers and volunteers to incorporate consent into their work with young people. ** Irish Girl Guides appoints new Chief Commissioner
------------------------------------------------------------
Lucan leader Amanda O'Sullivan, who has been with IGG since 1994 and has previously held a number of high profile positions within the organisation, has been appointed to the role ([link removed]) . Stepping down, Helen Concannon has received thanks for her six and a half years at the helm of Irish Girl Guides, during which time the organisation is said to have "gone from strength to strength" ([link removed]) .

** Ógras Leadership & Child Protection Courses
------------------------------------------------------------
For new Ógras leaders, or leaders who simply would like a refresher course, these will cover various topics such as planning a club, ddmin/insurance, scheduling, child protection, and much more. The first course, for Leinster and Ulster Leaders, will take place this coming Friday in Dundalk from 3pm. ** PLASTIC - Science Gallery Dublin
------------------------------------------------------------

Plastic has changed our lives, but the unsustainability of our relationship with this material is well documented. This exhibition is Science Gallery’s first national touring exhibition, visiting Wexford, Drogheda, Galway, and Letterkenny after its run in Dublin finishes on February 9. Locally, artists have been commissioned to work with the community to co-design a piece reflecting the cultural history, place, and relationship between the people and their environment. ** Grants available for the Irish Youth Foundation

Vhi, in partnership with the Irish Youth Foundation, is providing €25,000 to fund five not-for-profit voluntary and charitable organisations supporting children and young people living in disadvantaged circumstances. The grant will be used to organise a Run 4 Fun programme within the organisation - a health and well-being programme that encourages young people to engage with their fitness and nutrition. Reviving an Ancient Tradition to Engage Young Men - An Irish Rites of Passage Process
------------------------------------------------------------
In traditional societies, boys grew up under the guidance of ‘elders’ (men who mentor and advise), who guided them through the journey to manhood. This workshop emanates from recent research carried out by Michael Kelly re. young Irish men’s journey to manhood, exploring aspects of Irish indigenous wisdom and its place in a contemporary rites-of-passage programme. The benefits of a Rites-of-Passage Programme (ROP) will be examined, and its ability to offer a pathway and structure for young rural Irish men towards a deeper maturity demonstrated.
