John, this is a huge win for the sea cow.

Manatee deaths dropped last year, a critical slowdown for the species' survival!

This goes to show that the trial feeding program, which distributed 200,000 pounds of lettuce to starving sea cows, made a huge impact in protecting this beloved species. Because of these efforts, 800 manatee deaths were reported in 2022, a beneficial decline after over 1,000 were reported in 2021.

SAVE THE MANATEE [[link removed]]But we’re not out of the woods yet, John, chronic starvation is still on the rise for manatees. In fact, starvation has now outpaced boat strikes as a major threat to the sea cow’s survival.

With seagrass beds, a staple in manatees’ diets, decimated by pollutants and toxic algae blooms (intensified by the climate crisis), manatees are forced to seek food outside of the warm waters they need to survive the winter. It’s clear that lettuce is only a temporary solution to saving the sea cow. The only way to ensure their survival is to restore seagrass beds.
