Addressing methane pollution is one of the quickest and most effective ways to slow global warming. Unlike carbon dioxide, which compounds for a longer-lasting effect, methane traps in heat immediately, accelerating warming and pushing us closer to climate risks like wildfires and extreme weather.
To turn down the heat, EPA needs to reel in one of our nation’s biggest polluters – the oil and gas sector– by strengthening and swiftly finalizing draft rules that reduce climate and air pollution. EPA’s current proposal retains strong requirements for zero-emission equipment and makes key improvements like requiring inspections at all well sites. Now, we need the agency to:
- Further cut pollution from flaring;
- Strengthen standards for methane leaks from storage tanks; and
- Provide transparent data about large methane leaks known as superemitters in final standards.
By enacting strong methane safeguards, the Biden administration can implement solutions for pollution that make good on the president’s public health, climate and justice commitments – including cutting climate pollution in half by 2030.
To avert the worst that climate change has to offer, we need to hold our biggest polluters accountable. That’s why we need strong rules to hold them in check and accountable.
