America’s overcrowded prisons leave incarcerated people without the education, rehabilitation, job training, and other support they need to succeed after serving their time. In fact, a shocking 77% of formerly incarcerated people return within five years. This system isn’t working.

Instead of continually pouring resources & money into a system we know isn’t doing what it is supposed to — rehabilitating the incarcerated or keeping communities safe — we need to disrupt the prison system. 

That’s why today we are announcing the launch of Dream.Org’s $1 million Justice Innovation Prize. Our goal is to build a world beyond mass incarceration. We’re looking to leverage the power of emerging technologies and the genius of Dream.Org members like you to shake up our current overly punitive and cruel system and replace it with one that’s compassionate and produces positive results for both those inside and outside of America’s prisons. 

We’re looking for innovative, feasible, scalable, and impactful ideas that will have lasting change in the lives of individuals, their families, and/or communities most impacted by the criminal justice system. And we’re coming to you because we know that the people closest to the problems are most often the ones closest to a solution. What is your idea for fixing our prison system?
