Royce Williams has a story like no other. In 1952, he alone faced seven Soviet MiG-15s in a dogfight, shooting down four and suffering massive damage to his jet – and in an impossible feat, he made a near perfect landing back at his carrier.
He was instructed to keep this incident a military secret for more than 50 years – but after the story came out, I began a determined campaign in Washington to upgrade Royce beyond his Silver Star he received so long ago.
Working with a team of Williams’ fellow veterans and determined advocates throughout Southern California, I authored legislation and advocated for his recognition in the annual National Defense Authorization bill. We walked the halls and made the case to all.
Years of effort to bring Captain Williams’ (Ret.) full story to light are now complete. I am proud to see Royce Williams honored with the Navy Cross for his heroism, valor and courage. May his story inspire future heroes who answer the call to serve this great nation.
The Air & Space Museum will be live streaming the event HERE.
