The Taimen Fund Closes, Entrusts Mongolia Work to Wild Salmon Center

For decades, The Taimen Fund has worked to build scientific programming and partner networks to protect taimen in Mongolia. Now, The Taimen Fund hands its work to Wild Salmon Center and our International Taimen Initiative. Late last year, The Taimen Fund’s Board of Directors announced the transfer of remaining funds to WSC following extensive discussions with a number of organizations. The decision to pass the torch comes in recognition of WSC's leading role in efforts to protect and conserve wild salmonids—including our growing research on freshwater and sea-run taimen across the Western Pacific.

Seizing a Shot to Protect 28 Million Acres of Alaska Public Land

In Alaska, everything is bigger. That includes a historic opportunity to protect public land in a state teeming with wild salmon streams. Since January 2021, we’ve been working with our partners to stop five Public Land Orders that would open up some 28 million acres of public lands and waters to extractive industrial development. With this threat comes a historic opportunity for us to make the case that strong land protections—not resource extraction—best serve the public interest for some of the largest remaining intact ecosystems in the United States.

Meet Cyndi Curtis

In her five years with the Coos Watershed Association and Coquille Watershed Council, Cyndi Curtis developed an expertise in the ecology of tidal estuaries, while building strong connections with salmon-loving coastal communities. As Wild Salmon Center’s new Oregon North Coast Manager, Curtis is now tapping these skills and relationships to help channel historic restoration funding into salmon strongholds like the Tillamook and Nehalem. Welcome to the team, Cyndi!

2022 was quite the year of conservation milestones! And we couldn’t have done it without you. As we reflect on Wild Salmon Center’s 30th year in operation, we’d like to take a few moments to thank you for all you enabled us to accomplish. We’re grateful to have such a passionate, caring, wild-fish loving community working alongside us. People who aren’t afraid to speak up for their most beloved places. People who return to support us year after year. Here are 12 beautiful moments we shared with you over the course of 2022.
