Bees and other pollinators are vital to our whole food system. Without them, we’d have a hard time feeding our families some of our healthiest and favorite foods.
But toxic pesticides produced by companies like Bayer the Bee-Slayer, Monsanto, and Dow are linked to bee declines. Last winter beekeepers experienced some of the worst die-offs on record. They reported an average loss of nearly half of their hives.
Supermarkets have the power to turn this around. They could refuse to sell food grown with pesticides linked to bee declines. If they don’t want to see their produce sections become empty, they must act fast.
Already, some major food retailers have taken steps in the right direction. Aldi, Rite-Aid, Costco, and others have policies to help protect pollinators. But these policies aren’t strong enough -- and the biggest supermarkets in the U.S., like Kroger, are still dragging their feet.

We know that pesticide companies like Bayer-Monsanto are doing everything possible to keep their products on the market. They’re aiming to discredit the latest science and stop the federal government from taking action.
That’s why it’s so important to push supermarkets to act. But at the same time, we need to ramp up the pressure on the EPA and demand that it follow the science and not the direction of the pesticide industry.
So at Friends of the Earth, we’re working to shine a light on this crisis in the media. We’re raising awareness with the public about the impact of toxic pesticides on our food system. And we’re organizing across the country to make sure our voices are louder than Bayer-Monsanto, Dow and Syngenta’s lobbyists. But we can’t do this without you.
