Mining is an existential threat to the Amazon and its Indigenous inhabitants. So, what does it take to get mining out of the Amazon?

Thanks to your support, Amazon Watch and our allies in the Amazon are monitoring and exposing mining companies’ disastrous impacts on biodiversity and our climate, uplifting movement-building strategies including between Amazonian leaders and First Nations communities in Canada, and forging alliances with governments, press, and civil society to resist mining projects in the heart of the Amazon.

When you make a monthly gift to Amazon Watch, you make an ongoing commitment to our planet and to Amazonian Earth Defenders. Will you join Indigenous peoples in calling for Mining Out of the Amazon by beginning a monthly donation today?

MAKE A MONTHLY DONATION TO SEE AN AMAZON FREE FROM MINING!

In the heart of the Brazilian Amazon, Canadian mining company Belo Sun is developing what would be the largest open-pit gold mine in Brazilian history, threatening the fragile and biodiverse rainforest ecosystem and the communities that rely on it.

Your monthly gift will build on the success of resistance strategies including:

  • The launch of The Risks of Investing in Belo Sun report, which exposed Belo Sun’s threats to the already-fragile Xingu River Basin, one of the most biodiverse areas on Earth, which was reported by the Financial Post as an "attack by a powerful environmental group seeking to starve it of investment dollars in an attempt to block it from building what would be the largest open pit mine in Brazil";
  • Coordination with Amazon Watch’s long-time partners including the Association of Brazil’s Indigenous Peoples (APIB) and newly-elected allies in the Brazilian government to support Indigenous policies in Brazil and internationally;
  • And, the amplification of our two major goals in the campaign against Canadian mining in the Amazon – highlighting mining’s clear association with biodiversity loss, and exposing this predatory industry’s connections to the climate emergency – so that the Brazilian and Canadian governments’ actions are accountable to the reality of mining’s disastrous impact.

Together, we will expose the risks of destroying an ecosystem as critical as the Amazon, and call for policies that honor Indigenous rights and move us toward a livable future. Your monthly gift will uplift this movement every step of the way, until we see mining OUT of the Amazon!

Thank you for your dedication to an Amazon free from mining!

For the Amazon,

Leila Salazar-López
