NOTES FROM THE FIELD | 2023 | No. 1

We're All Connected

[link removed]

We're all dependent on our local ecosystems-and we all play a
vital role in maintaining their delicate balance. San Diego is a biodiversity hotspot, one of the most biologically rich--and vulnerable--regions on Earth. Explore how you're
making a difference for local ecosystems and wildlife, from high in
the skies to the world under our feet, through our Southwest
Conservation Hub

537 California condors today

SOARING TOGETHER

In 1982, only 22 California condors

remained. With the support of wildlife allies like you, more than 500
soar over the Southwest today. Through 40 years of collaborative and
cutting-edge conservation, you're bringing the largest birds flying
across North America back to their native range.

ROOTING FOR THE FUTURE

As drought, bark beetle infestations, and the effects of climate
change take their toll on Torrey pines

, you're fueling collaborative efforts to save these critically
endangered and local icons. Your support helps restore
populations-with 244 seedlings planted in 2022-that are
already putting down roots for the future of the species.

SLOW AND STEADY

Even with their thick, domed shells, critically endangered Mojave
desert tortoises

need protection-especially as hatchlings! Together, we're
securing their future by headstarting the next generation, including
the 69 little tortoises that hatched last year!

48 western burrowing owls

HOOT HOOT HOORAY

These tiny, charismatic San Diegans spend time both overhead and
underground. In 2022, we reintroduced 48 western burrowing owls

that were hatched and raised at the Safari Park into protected
habitats-all part of our ongoing efforts to save this threatened
species. With you by our side, we're ensuring that burrowing owls have
a future for generations to come, right here in San Diego.
