Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen Meets with Counterpart in China

Associated Press: U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen met on Wednesday with her Chinese counterpart and pledged an effort to manage differences and “prevent competition from becoming anything ever near conflict” as the two nations try to thaw relations. Yellen’s first face-to-face meeting with Vice Premier Liu He in Zurich is the highest-ranking contact between the two countries since their presidents agreed last November during their first in-person meeting to look for areas of potential cooperation (Associated Press). Reuters: Yellen’s meeting with Liu came before a three-country visit to Africa, where she will push to expand U.S. trade and business ties with the continent, which China has long dominated. She is also expected to repeat her criticism of Beijing – now the world’s largest creditor – for not moving more quickly to provide debt relief, as well as its use of forced labor in China’s Xinjiang region and “non-market” economic practices (Reuters).

Post Millennial: Trump was locked out of his Facebook and Twitter in January 2021, with the companies alleging that he incited the violence that resulted in protesters storming the Capitol building while Congress was certifying Biden’s 2020 presidential victory. Microsoft to Layoff 10,000 Employees
CNBC: Microsoft said Wednesday that it’s letting go of 10,000 employees through March 31 as the software maker braces for slower revenue growth. The company is taking a $1.2 billion charge in the fiscal second quarter that will result in a negative impact of 12 cents to earnings per share. Alphabet, Amazon and Salesforce are among the technology companies that have lowered head count in recent weeks. The contraction comes after demand for cloud computing and collaboration services picked up as enterprises, government agencies and schools encouraged remote work to reduce Covid exposure (CNBC). FAA Changes EKG Parameters to Allow Pilots to Pass Health Test Easier
Townhall: Late last year, after the vaccine rollout, the Federal Aviation Administration quietly changed the EKG parameters for pilots in a move that’s raising concern about flight safety. According to a report on Substack by Vaccine Safety Research Foundation founder Steve Kirsch, the October 2022 version of the FAA Guide for Aviation Medical Examiners widened the range acceptable for pilots to fly. “The PR used to be in the range of .12 to .2,” he writes. “It is now: .12 to .3 and potentially even higher. This is a very wide range; it accommodates people who have cardiac injury” (Townhall). TexasLindsay: Tucker covers @StKirsch’s bombshell finding about the FAA loosening its EKG range for pilots while offering no explanation as to why to the public (Twitter).

Dow Tumbles 600 More Points Wednesday
CNBC: The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled more than 600 points on Wednesday as investors took profits on some of the strong January gains and as a disappointing December retail sales reading raised concerns about a recession. Shares of banks led the losses (CNBC). Wal Street Journal: Wednesday morning data showed retail sales fell 1.1% in December, with higher interest rates and inflation hurting spending on vehicles, gasoline and furniture. Wholesale price inflation fell to its slowest pace since March 2021, brightening the price outlook for consumers and policy makers but casting a cloud over hopes for a “soft landing” (Wall Stret Journal).
