A collection of opportunities for educators in and around Philadelphia   Celebrate Black History Month with Us!   Black History Month at the Center During the month of February, the National Constitution Center will honor the achievements and rich heritage of African Americans, and the impact their stories have had on constitutional history. This is part of the National Constitution Center’s freedom and equality themed programming and discounted admission through March. Visit the museum in February to join us for the following daily programs and visit our website for a full list of in person and online Black History Month programming, made possible through the generosity of TD Bank: Decoding the Document: Emancipation Proclamation – Take a closer look at a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation and explore its background and what it meant for over 4 million African Americans then held in bondage. First Amendment Freedom Fighters Tour – Participate in a tour highlighting the freedom fighters who used the power of the First Amendment to gain freedom for themselves and ensure it for others. The Road to Freedom: The Story of Slavery in America Program – This interactive program explores the story of slavery in the United States through a constitutional lens, taking visitors on a journey from the time of the Constitutional Convention to the start of the Civil War. Freedom Fighters Story Corner – Join us as we read books honoring the bravery and brilliance of famous African Americans from history like Ida B. Wells, Harriet Tubman, Henry Box Brown, and more. The Four Harriets of History Program – Explore the lives of four American women—Harriet Robinson Scott, Harriet Tubman, Harriet Jacobs, and Harriet Beecher Stowe—who confronted slavery through literature, lawsuits, and direct action in their efforts to free themselves and others from bondage. Freedom Fighter Portrait Books – Explore the lives of famous African American freedom fighters while creating your own freedom fighter portrait book! Learn about the incredible lives of African American figures like Harriet Scott, Barbara Jordan, Henry Box Brown, and more! LEARN MORE Live from the Museum The Fight for Civil Rights and Liberties Tour Wednesday, January 25 | 12 p.m. ET Friday, January 27 | 1 p.m. ET Join us for live virtual tours of the Center’s The Story of We the People exhibit and explore the civil rights movement from Declaration of Independence to today. The tour will examine key leaders of the movement, its core constitutional arguments, its legacy, and impact of the Warren Court. REGISTER: WEDNESDAY, JAN. 25 REGISTER: FRIDAY, JAN. 27     Constitutional Ambassadors Program   Celebrate Black History Month with a Field Trip to the Center Bring your students to the Center to participate in a free Constitutional Ambassadors Program (CAP) to learn how key African Americans used the First Amendment to advance the cause of equality. During the program, students will examine the historical context and the drafting of the First Amendment—focusing especially on the factors motivating America’s Founding generation. Students will also examine various types of speech, including symbolic speech, hate speech, and political speech. Admission: Free! Transportation funding is also available. Availability: Weekdays Timing: Program lasts about two hours, with the schedule planned by the National Constitution Center's staff Schedule Information: Every CAP includes: an introduction by one of the Center's educators a Scholar Exchange session where a scholar discusses the historical background and context of the chosen topic exhibit exploration a civil dialogue facilitated by a trained museum educator an opportunity to watch Freedom Rising, a live theatrical experience BOOK NOW   Visit the Center Presidents Day Monday, February 20 | 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. The National Constitution Center celebrates Presidents Day with a variety of in-person and virtual events and resources exploring Article II of the Constitution, the role of the executive branch, and the individuals who have held the office of the president throughout American history. The museum will be open on Presidents Day, Monday, February 20, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Admission is free thanks to the generosity of TD Bank. RESERVE TICKETS For Educators   Professional Learning Opportunity: The Fourth Amendment Wednesday, February 15 | 6:30 – 8 p.m. ET Join us to examine the historical context and the drafting of the Fourth Amendment. Participants will explore the Fourth Amendment's text, history, and interpretation, describe key terms and ideas, and define some of the key debates about where the Fourth Amendment is headed in an age of new technology. Clark Neily, Senior Vice President for Legal Studies at Cato Institute, joins us for this session. REGISTER Summer Educator Institute Applications Applications are available until February 24, 2023 The Center's education team is thrilled to offer four professional learning opportunities for educators this July—including two virtual workshops and two in-person institutes. Apply for one of these programs and join teachers from across the country to engage with ideologically diverse constitutional scholars. Learn more   National History Day: Philadelphia Competition March 15–16, 2023 This March, the National Constitution Center will host the NHD Philly Citywide Competition. National History Day is a year-long academic program focused on historical research, interpretation and creative expression for middle and high school students. Students prepare original projects, such as a documentaries, exhibits, essays, performances, or websites, along the way gaining real-world experience conducting historical research and analysis of primary sources. The winners of local and state contests move on to the national competition in Washington, D.C.
