The UAE has appointed an oil company boss as president of the COP28 climate conference, alarming environmental groups.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE), the host of COP 28, is receiving backlash after appointing a leading actor in the oil industry as president-designate of the UN’s climate conference.

Sultan al-Jaber, the head of the state oil giant Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), is being urged to step down from his role at the company as it is an apparent conflict of interest with his position with COP 28.

"French Oscars" Ban Nominees Accused of Sexual Violence

The César awards have banned nominees who are under investigation for rape or sexual violence from attending the ceremony. The decision was made “out of respect for any possible victims” and will take effect at this year’s ceremony on February 24th.
