The GOP defunded the IRS in 2010.
In these first few weeks of a Republican controlled House, we’ve seen where Republican priorities lie: with their ultra-wealthy donors and multinational corporations.
A quick recap: Last year, Congress passed a bill into law that boosted IRS funding, allowing the IRS to go after wealthy tax-cheats and enabling it to provide better customer service to taxpayers.
Why this was necessary: The IRS was defunded by Republicans in 2010, allowing more wealthy tax cheats to go without audits, and empowering corporations to cheat. With 50,000 IRS workers set to retire soon, we need to get new personnel trained and ready to simply keep the IRS running.
Now, House Republicans passed a bill that would rescind this funding. The only winners here would be big corporations who evade taxes. When corporations avoid taxes, working people are left to pick up the slack, and this bill would add $114 billion to the deficit over ten years.
I was proud to oppose this bill. While it passed in the House, it won’t become law any time soon thanks to our Senate majority and President Biden. But this is a clear example of who Republicans fight for when they have power. Show your support for a fully funded IRS by signing our petition.
