Washington has remained broken for far too long. The power brokers in our nation’s capital stopped putting Americans first long ago, and it’s time conservatives used their leverage to change this.
At the start of this Congress, I worked with 19 of my colleagues to demand key institutional changes from Republican leadership during the House Speaker debate. These changes are a major victory for the conservative cause and for the American people.
When you fight the swamp, the swamp fights back, but that’s the only way to change the status quo in Washington. By not caving to the powers that be, we showed what can be done when we stick to our guns and hold the line on our conservative beliefs.
Our demands in the House Speaker fight were clear: We wanted the tools to put a check on the swamp in order to defend the American people from getting rolled over by it.
The deal conservatives achieved will result in real change to Congress and will provide for more accountability, spending limits, and empowerment of all members in Congress.
Here is a snapshot of what we accomplished:
A reversal of Nancy Pelosi’s repeal of Thomas Jefferson’s “motion to Vacate,” which allows for any Member to motion to remove the Speaker of the House
A requirement that every bill has a single subject to avoid “Christmas tree” style bills filled with swamp goodies
A requirement that amendments remain germane to legislation in order to reduce pork-barrel spending during appropriations debates
Restoration of the “72 Hour Rule” that will allow every member to have 72 hours to read and review bills before they come to the floor
A requirement to put forth a 10-year balanced budget in order to stop inflationary spending
A requirement that the House will bring up all 12 annual spending bills (appropriations) individually to avoid “Omnibus” packages, like the $1.7 Trillion monstrosity passed in late December
Constraints on spending that will limit appropriations to not more than the FY22 topline level in order to force fiscal responsibility
A check on Democrats that ensures we will not raise the debt ceiling without reforms to our out-of-control spending
Committees made up of Members that represent the entire conference and our conservative principles including on “A Committees” and the powerful “Rules Committee”
The creation of the “Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government” which will investigate and highlight the weaponization against the American people by federal agencies such as the FBI, DOJ, and NIH.
Votes on key legislation, including legislation coinciding with the Texas Border Plan and legislation to put an end to the COVID-19 national emergency
I'm encouraged by the results of our stand this month. I will always fight for freedom, limited government, and the rights bestowed upon us by America's Founders. This was about standing up for America. Thank you for your prayers and support. God bless.
