John,

Good news!

Scientists are cautiously optimistic that the ozone layer is on track to recover after decades of human use of ozone-depleting substances.

According to a just-released United Nations report, if the progress continues, the ozone layer will return to its 1980 levels over the coming decades. After years of action and focus, we’re finally seeing the results for which we’ve been working and advocating.

The impetus for this development was the Montreal Protocol, a 1987 international agreement to reduce the consumption and production of substances depleting the ozone layer.

The new UN report states the Montreal Protocol agreement was fundamental to driving the restoration, which is on track to occur for most of the world by 2040. However, the report strikes a note of caution, stating recovery for the Arctic and Antarctic will take longer — 2045 and 2066, respectively.

With the progress made in restoring the Ozone layer, we now have a proven model for coming together internationally to tackle climate change.

The restoration of the ozone layer is a testament to coordinated international efforts over many years to stop pollutant damage, John.

It’s a win-win for the environment and proves we can do the same for climate change. Our SEEC members are committed to working every day to make it happen. Will you chip in and let our SEEC members know you’re standing with them? [[link removed]]
