Dear John

On Friday we filed a legal challenge against the UK government over its decision to approve plans for a polluting new coal mine in Whitehaven, Cumbria.

We believe the government acted unlawfully when it green lit the mine. And now we need your help.

This polluting and unnecessary mine won’t lower our energy bills. The steelmaking industry doesn’t want it [1]. It won’t reduce coal imports. Or create long-lasting local jobs.

But it will irreversibly harm our planet.

With your help, our incredible legal team will fight the decision to approve it. We'll challenge the government’s fundamentally confused approach to the climate impacts of the mine.

But we can’t do this without you. If you can, will you support our campaign with a donation?
I'LL DONATE TO STOP THE COAL MINE
While the world faces a climate emergency, we really shouldn’t need to be challenging this. The mine is expected to extract millions of tonnes of coal each year.

Any sensible government would have chosen to leave coal in the ground where it belongs. But instead ours opted to dig it up.

It says the decision is about jobs. But as European steelmakers move away from using coal there’s a huge question mark over how long jobs at the mine will last.

Approving the mine sends us in the opposite direction we should be heading, like local jobs in renewable energy. Or the UK’s opportunity to become a leader in green technology.

With your help we can challenge the government’s huge mistake. And together with Cumbrian campaigners we can shine a light on sustainable ways to help the local community thrive.

As I said, thanks to dedicated supporters like you our legal team has a long history of overcoming environmental injustice. Like last year's win against the government over its inadequate climate strategy.

Once again, your support will be absolutely crucial. If you can, please do help us fight back against the Whitehaven coal mine with a donation.
I'LL DONATE TO STOP THE COAL MINE
Like lots of other organisations, the cost-of-living crisis has left us concerned about our future.

It’s only with donations from amazing supporters like you that we’re able to carry on standing up against catastrophic decisions like the Whitehaven coal mine.

So anything you can do to help us is much appreciated. That said, this crisis is affecting all of us. So I completely understand if you’re not able to give right now.

Thank you so much for all your generosity.

All the best,

Niall
