FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

*Skagit County?s Multi-Jurisdictional Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan Update Now Available Online *

?

Skagit County Department of Emergency Management (DEM) has released its 2023 mid-cycle update to the multi-jurisdictional National Hazard Mitigation Plan. This plan is a joint effort between Skagit County, local and tribal governments, and community partners including Dike and Draining Districts and Skagit PUD.

DEM is required to update this plan on a routine basis, with the most recent comprehensive update completed in May 2020 [ [link removed] ]. The 2023 mid-cycle report summarizes the mitigation activities that have been accomplished since the previous update and addresses ongoing projects and any issues that have been identified by the plan holders.

Mitigation initiatives are defined as activities designed to reduce or eliminate losses resulting from natural hazards. These mitigation initiatives are the key element of the hazard mitigation plan. It is through the implementation of these initiatives that the planning partners can strive to become disaster-resistant through sustainable hazard mitigation.

Several general categories are considered when developing this plan, related not only to emergency management but also inclusive of the Community Rating System?a FEMA voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages community floodplain management practices. These categories include:

* Prevention
* Public Information and Education
* Property Protection
* Emergency Services and Response
* Natural resources
* Structural projects
* Recovery

Skagit County is dedicated to involving the public directly in the review and updates of the Hazard Mitigation Plan. The public will continue to be updated on progress made through the county?s website and annual progress reports. Comments regarding the plan may be submitted to DEM by emailing comments to: [email protected].
