Just over 10 years ago, in November 2012, my son Jordan was shot and killed by a man who confronted him and his friends about the volume of their music.

Along with other Black women who had lost their sons to gun violence, I turned my pain into purpose and became a “Mother of the Movement,” joining the fight for gun control advocacy in state houses around the country and in Washington D.C. 

Then in 2018 – after the Parkland shooting and glaring lack of action by Congress – I was so frustrated. I decided that I should run and tell my son Jordan’s story far and wide. Together, we flipped a seat long held by Republicans, including none other than Newt Gingrich. 

In the last four years in Congress, we’ve passed historic gun safety legislation for the first time in a generation, sent an assault weapons ban to the Senate, and taken the fight to the NRA with the power of our stories as survivors of gun violence. 

Team, your support gives me the courage to continue channeling my pain into purpose. As I head into my third term in Congress, I will continue the fight alongside my NewDem colleagues to end gun violence.
