John,
My first week in Congress was eye-opening.
The extreme right-wing faction of the Republican Party — the same people
who boosted the insurrection and denied election results — proved that
they are ready to shut down Congress to push for deeply unpopular policies
like forcing cuts to Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare.
The fact that key social programs are on the chopping block means that the
rest of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and I are going to need your
help to make sure no one in Congress — regardless of party — agrees to a
deal that balances the budget on the backs of the poor, the sick, our
seniors and struggling everyday Americans.

We need to use this moment to show how both the extreme right-wing and the
corporate wing of the Republican Party are both dangerously extreme. Their
shared priorities are to redistribute as much money from working people to
big corporations as possible.
Don't just take my word for it. The first bill they brought to the House
floor was to eliminate programs made to catch wealthy tax cheats — all so
their billionaire donors could avoid taxes.
The organizing work we do now will create a stark contrast with
Republicans to build the kind of Democratic majority that does things —
like pass the Voting Rights Act, the Fair Housing Act, restore abortion
rights, and advance union rights.
We need to push and work with the White House to get things done. This
means we should mount support when they act to advance our goals and draw
a line when actions harm working people.
For example, the White House recently cleared the path for people to more
easily get abortion medication at pharmacies and legally use the USPS to
mail it to states with bans (like my home state of Texas). We can applaud
great moves like that, while also holding the administration accountable
when they do things that aren’t in-line with our values.
We need to be comfortable with doing both. That's when we get to a
powerful, mature movement that can hold all these truths simultaneously to
affect real change.

better investment in working people; any amount is a big help!

Congressman Greg Casar
