** Meeting the Moment
------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,
As most New Year’s do, this one started with a bang. For many, it was the bang of fireworks. Here in Los Angeles, it was thunder, lightening, and more rain than we have seen in a very very long time.
Like most, I love the rain. When I’m indoors. It’s calming and romantic and in a city that gets very little of it, there is usually a bit of a thrill. Finally we get to wear sweaters and turn on our electric fireplaces.
The problem is, for tens of thousands of people in the county, the rain is anything but calming and romantic. When you don’t have a place to live, when your home is a tent on the sidewalk, or maybe a few cardboard boxes folded into a hut, rain is a disaster.
Every time we have even a few hours a rain we get calls and visits from people who just lost their documents. Birth certificates get soaked. IDs get washed away or hauled up with the trash. And that’s after a few hours. It has been raining in Los Angeles for weeks. Skid Row was flooded. For the tens of thousands of unhoused residents of Los Angeles County, the last few weeks have been nothing short of apocalyptic.
Today the sun is out for the first time in what feels like a very long time and as I get my day started I know that our battle now begins. We will without doubt be flooded with clients new and old who have just lost everything- including the documents they desperately need if they ever want to get back inside. We will see unprecedented requests for help with birth certificates, IDs, social security cards, and other documents. Just as we are coming out of the holidays and into the first quarter- which is notoriously terrible for fundraising- we are going to see a bigger need than we have in a long time. And not just in LA. The weather took its toll across the country, from massive snowstorms to shocking tornadoes. Unhoused- and newly or nearly unhoused- people across the country are in trouble. We are now in rapid response mode.
So we’re asking for your help. Can you donate 20 dollars, or even 5? Can you help us meet this moment? A small donation from you will be a life changing document for our clients. Please help us be the change someone desperately needs right now.
