Join WIIS NL on Wednesday, January 25, for a roundtable discussion on preventing conflict-related sexual violence, co-hosted by the British Embassy in The Hague and Leiden University. Experts will discuss what states should be doing to improve the situation on the ground and answer key questions about the future of the WPS Agenda and the limits of its current formulation.

Conversation Unscripted: Tech interested? A Toolkit on how to Join and Enable a Diverse Tech Workforce


Join WIIS Brussels on January 26 for a breakfast roundtable as part of the Conversations Unscripted program. Conversations Unscripted is a multistakeholder initiative that brings together European leaders to explore avenues to reduce the gender gap in the fields of politics and technology. The launch event will bring together leading experts from the technology landscape, including Professor Letizia Jaccheri, Chair of COST Action ‘European Network For Gender Balance in Informatics (EUGAIN), and Laila Deeb, Sofware Engineering Manager, Founder of Syrian Women in Tech (SWIT) and Chair of the Brussels Binder Database, for a discussion on how to address the gender imbalance in the technology field.

Afghan Women’s Education Under the Taliban


In our WIIS Student Blog Spotlight, author Claire Pamerleau (University of Pittsburgh, WIIS Chapter) explores the current status of Afghan women living under the Taliban’s rule as they face mounting social and economic restrictions. This devastating reversal of progress has affected even the youngest generation of Afghan women, as girls’ education is yet another casualty in the war on women’s rights under the Taliban.

In WIIS Brussels’ latest podcast, host Ilana Bet-El (Advisory Board Member, WIIS Brussels) is joined by Suzanne Lynch (Chief Brussels Correspondent & Associate Editor, Politico Europe), and Stefanie Bolzen (UK Correspondent, Die Welt & Welt am Sonntag) for a conversation on the differences and synergies between media, journalism, and communication. Dr. Jo L. Husbands Memorial Fund


Dr. Jo L. Husbands was a long-time supporter of WIIS and served as a member of the WIIS advisory board. In honor of Dr. Husbands, WIIS has established the Dr. Jo L. Husbands Memorial Fund. All donations to the Dr. Jo L. Husbands Memorial Fund will support the WIIS’ Next Generation Scholars (NGS) Program. Like the Summer Symposia, this program aims to build and sustain a community of young national and international security experts who are diverse and knowledgeable about the gender dynamics of national and international security challenges.

Call for Papers: Legacies of Violence and War


The Journal of Security Studies has issued a call for papers and special issue proposals on the theme of Legacies of Violence and War. They welcome both completed individual papers as well as proposals for special issues/forums exploring a wide range of substantive research questions on the theme of this special call. Special issue proposals are due December 15, 2022. Individual papers (outside any proposed special issue) are due February 15, 2023.
