| Dear John,
I am writing to you from Dnipro, Ukraine, where as you may have heard, there was a horrific missile hit on a residential building on Saturday evening. The latest update from public sources reports at least 35 people dead, including two children, and at least 75 injured, including 14 children. Dozens are still missing, and the death toll is expected to rise as more people are believed to be buried under the rubble. This is just the latest in fatal attacks on the country that prove the worst of the war is far from over. As temperatures across Ukraine continue to drop this bitter winter millions are facing unpredictable power, water and heat outages, and people’s homes continue to be destroyed daily.

Myself, our UNHCR team and our local NGO partner Mission Proliska were on the ground immediately after the attack, and again on Sunday, assisting over 520 impacted people with more than 1,600 essential non-food items including clothing and hygiene kits. In addition, 225 sheets of tarpaulin were handed out to cover damaged windows and some 53 survivors have been provided with temporary accommodation in collective sites and assisted with the transportation there. Proliska’s team of psychologists also continued their work on the ground, having assisted over 90 survivors with first psychological aid. |

We will keep you updated on the response as more develops. This rapid response is only made possible through the continued support of donors like you, who have helped us ensure that our warehouses are stocked with supplies in and around Ukraine and that our staff are on the ground. We truly rely on you to keep this level of support going — please give what you can now to support people who have lost their loved ones and their homes, and those who have been forced to flee due to the war in Ukraine.
Thank you, Octavian Mohorea Head of UNHCR sub-office in Dnipro, Ukraine |
