Friend,
Right now we are facing down a significant challenge for the new
Congressional term. According to the Treasury Department, the Biden
administration plans to take “extraordinary measures” to prevent exceeding
the debt ceiling as early as Thursday.
Rather than increase the debt ceiling, which would prevent us from
defaulting on our existing bonds and ward off a recession on a global
scale, Republicans would choose to gut vital social programs like Social
Security and Medicare and leave citizens struggling to get by. A debate on
the debt ceiling could result in another government shutdown, and it would
hold Americans hostage to the will of the GOP.
That’s why we need to make our voices heard now. [ [link removed] ]Tell President Biden
he must increase the debt ceiling to prevent a wide-scale recession.
The United States has never defaulted on its debts in the past. The mere
threat could cost the government billions and eliminate millions of jobs.
President Obama attempted to negotiate with Republicans in order to raise
the debt ceiling in 2011, but those negotiations yielded an agreement that
prolonged the Great Recession, led to the downgrading of the United
States’ credit rating, and nearly resulted in cuts to Social Security and
Medicare.
We cannot afford to take piecemeal measures to avoid a debt ceiling
breach. The only way we can continue to provide for Americans is to
increase it.

minimum.
