New York Governor Kathy Hochul has nominated Justice Hector LaSalle to become the next Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals. LaSalle’s anti-abortion, anti-worker, and anti-due process judicial record demonstrates that he is the wrong choice to lead New York’s highest court for the next 14 years.
At a time when reproductive freedoms, workers’ rights, and civil rights are under attack, New York deserves a champion who will protect the rights of our most vulnerable communities. The Chief Judge will not only serve as the Court of Appeals' swing vote, but will also help determine whether it can serve as a critical counterweight to the U.S. Supreme Court. The stakes in this matter are high – singular court decisions can have massive ramifications for hundreds of thousands of people for years to come. LaSalle’s deeply conservative judicial record should disqualify him from serving as Chief Judge. His nomination must be rejected.
