Dear John

Happy New Year from all of us at CPRE.

We're excited to let you know that you can now sign up to take part in our Star Count, which is taking place 17-24 February.

Each year, the results from Star Count help us create a map of the nation's view of the night sky and monitor the impact of light pollution across the country. Together we can work towards rewilding the night for the benefit of people and wildlife – we hope you’ll join us!

As January rolls on, we hope you’ll be able to find some time to connect with nature in your local countryside or green space. Writer and naturalist Susie White who writes Country Diary entries for The Guardian shares her top tips – scroll down to have a read!

Save the date for Star Count!

Save the date and sign up to count the stars with us between 17 and 24 February! Your counts will help us make a map of where star-spotters are enjoying deep, dark skies. By showing on a map where light pollution is most serious, we can work with local councils and others to decide what to do about it. Last year, thousands of you took part and we hope you'll join us again this year!

As the affordable housing crisis deepens, our 2022 state of brownfield report found – yet again – that the number of new homes that could be built on brownfield land remains high. In fact, it has reached record levels, with more than half a million homes with planning permission waiting to be built.

Stand up for the countryside in 2023

The climate emergency is the greatest threat to the countryside, which is why it needs your support now more than ever. We put your money to good use, collaborating with communities and holding government to account for positive change and a sustainable countryside.

Best wishes,

Cat
