Few leaders stand as tall as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the fight for justice. Today, I hope you and your family reflect on our moment in the ongoing struggle for a just society and commit yourselves to service.

In 2023, Dr. King’s fight for justice is still so relevant. Recent development shows that a case that could further shrink the scope of the Voting Rights Act is before a federal appeals court. If successful, it would significantly diminish the legal ability to challenge ballot regulations and redistricting maps that are racially discriminatory.

But we also have a lot to be hopeful about.

We are still working hard to create a nation where diversity is welcomed and opportunity is abundant. House Democrats welcomed the first Black Gen Z member of Congress. The Congressional Black Caucus saw its largest cohort in 50 years. President Biden and Democrats are continuing to fight for voting rights and civil liberties despite the dysfunction in the GOP.

And we have you, John . Voters and supporters just like you sent a clear message to Washington that you’re done with fear-mongering and policies that don’t work for working people. Voters want to look ahead to what we can build together.

And that’s precisely what I plan to do.
