Today, we honor the extraordinary life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. King lived his life guided by a commitment to fighting for justice for all — for a future in which people could live free from prejudice and oppression.

Of course, that fight continues today.

For years, Republicans have maliciously tried to undermine our elections for their own political gain. Across the country and here in North Carolina, they’ve repeatedly attempted to restrict one of the rights Dr. King fought so hard for: the right to vote.

Just last month, the Supreme Court heard Moore v. Harper, a case centered on North Carolina Republicans’ dangerous gerrymander of our Congressional map — a map originally drawn with the intent of silencing the voices of thousands of voters, particularly those in marginalized communities.

It’s clearer than ever: Our efforts to secure the right to vote must continue.

For decades, I have fought for voting rights in the courthouse and legislature — and last year, I was proud to vote in favor of voting rights legislation in the House. However, there is more we can — and must — do in ensuring Dr. King’s dream is realized, and today, we must redouble our efforts.
