John, today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day — a day I take to honor and reflect upon the legacy that Dr. King left on our nation.

Voting Rights. Equality. Service. Those are all things Dr. King stood for, and while we’ve made a lot of progress on many of these fronts — we all know — we have a long way to go.

The right to vote continues to be under attack across our nation, disproportionately impacting Black and Brown communities.

We need to ensure we’re providing equal access to opportunities for all people in our communities — especially economic opportunities that provide relief to families struggling right now.

Service to others doesn’t just help those in need but is a way to lift each other up — something we can easily lose sight of if we’re not dedicated to it.

But also, let’s remember that Dr. King knew none of this would be easy. These are not issues we’re going to solve overnight, we need to find the right way to work together to get things done — starting right here in Philadelphia.

Together, I know we can achieve these great ideals that Dr. King held so dear.

In solidarity,

Derek Green
