Today, we reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and do so at a time when our nation is experiencing division and turmoil.
The events of the past year remind us that the road to equality in this country is a long one and there is still work to be done. As we confront the challenges of our present, it is important that we continue to learn from his leadership and fight for voting rights.
In his wisdom, Dr. King once said, "So long as I do not firmly and irrevocably possess the right to vote, I do not possess myself."
This Martin Luther King Jr. Day we can honor his legacy through action. Join me in calling on lawmakers in Congress to fulfill Dr. King's message by protecting our voting rights. Together, we can support MLK's dreams for a better tomorrow.
In 2022, we saw an onslaught of voter suppression laws introduced in legislatures nationwide that made it harder – especially for people of color – to vote. Purging thousands from voter rolls, closing polling places, enacting strict voter ID laws, and the list goes on and on.
At a time like this, inaction is not an option.
We must commit to opposing discriminatory voting laws, expanding voting rights protections, and honor Dr. King’s life work by keeping the fight alive. We owe it to generations of Americans to protect and ensure their vote counts.
