Today, we pause to honor the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader who dedicated his life to advocating for Civil Rights and making sure our nation lived up to its highest ideals.
To honor Dr. King’s legacy is to continue his fight for justice.
He called on us to stand up to injustice, to defend our freedoms, and to build an inclusive democracy for all Americans. He told us to keep fighting for what’s right – and to never let up.
Well, our freedoms and our very democracy are under attack right now. State legislatures across the country have passed “Jim Crow 2.0” laws that are designed to weaken access to the ballot box and disenfranchise voters of color.
Last year, I marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the same bridge Civil Rights leaders risked their lives fighting for our precious right to vote.
We walked in the shadow of the heroes who came before us and we were reminded of how much is at stake right now. Our democracy is fragile – and it’s now our turn to defend it.
This is our moment to stand up, to fight back, and strengthen our democracy. This is our moment to carry on the legacy of Dr. King. It’s all on the line right now and it’s going to take each and every one of us working together to protect our rights and our freedoms.
The road ahead will not be easy, but I know a better world is possible.
So let’s fight for it.
