Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was nothing short of a trailblazer for civil rights and justice for Black Americans. And as I enter my first full term Congressional term, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on our current state of justice and equality.
Dr. King Jr. and so many other civil rights leaders are why we have our voting rights today. They put their lives on the line to ensure every American has the right to vote. But now, those same voting rights are under constant threat. We can never take these fundamental rights for granted, and I will remain vigilant to protect these rights as we head into the 118th Congress.
As we kick off the new legislative session under a GOP-controlled House and the Republican Party with voting rights in their sight after a humbling defeat last November, we must do everything to protect them no matter the obstacles posed.
It’s time for Congress to prove it truly respects the memory of the late Reverend and further protect our voting rights by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Whether or not the GOP stands in our way, we must renew the fight to advance voting rights.
So as we commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. and the accomplishments of the Civil Rights Movement, let’s look forward to how we’ll protect our fundamental right to vote today and continue to bend the arc toward justice!
