Today, as we remember the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we should celebrate the progress we’ve made as a country, but it's also important to recognize the hard work that’s still ahead of us.
Dr. King and other civil rights leaders sacrificed to fight for justice and the civil liberties of all Americans. We have a responsibility to carry on their fight and bring their hopes for our country to fruition, together.
Dr. King reminds us that our country is made rich by acts of service both large and small. He told us, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”
As a mom of four, former Navy helicopter pilot, federal prosecutor, and the Congresswoman for New Jersey’s 11th, I know firsthand there are so many different ways to serve. We all have a role to play to build the country Dr. King hoped we would become.
We must work together to protect voting rights and combat cynical attempts to suppress the vote. We must continue the centuries-long fight for racial equality and justice -- for good-paying jobs, living wages, and a more affordable cost of living.
Dr. King knew his ultimate dream wouldn’t be achieved in his lifetime, but he carried a profound hope that our country would continue bending the arc toward justice. Now, it is up to all of us to continue that cause.
I’m so grateful I can count on you to join me in this fight.
Thank you and all the best,
Mikie
