John, today we honor the life and memory of Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. as a powerhouse figure in the Civil Rights movement.

Dr. King fought to advance American society and highlight the devastating
effects of systemic racism that we still confront to this very day. He
spoke in his famous "I Have a Dream" speech about the chains of poverty,
segregation, and oppression that Black Americans still encounter 60 years
later.

While we as a country have made progress, we also have still been
incapable of grappling with the deep and tangled roots that created our
nation.

We still witness white nationalism rise in the wake of the last
administration. We still see police brutality directed disproportionately
at Black people and people of color. We still feel the ripple effects of
policies cemented in our culture long ago. We seem to take the proverbial
four steps forward and then two steps back.

It is up to us, these many years forward, to continue the work of Dr. King
and to continue to push for a country that lives up to its claims. We must
continue to amplify Black voices and the voices that have been
historically restricted by the stain of white supremacy and our sordid
past. We must continue to push for progressive legislation and correct the
policies that have made true equality out of reach for too many.

progress in America but chipping in a small donation today?
