Friend,

“The time is always right to do what is right,” said Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. The right thing to do is to invest in historically Black
education.

There are over 100 historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in
the nation, places such as Claflin, Morehouse, Howard, and Spelman, that
enroll more than 300,000 students per year.

These institutions, a number of which have served the African-American
community for over 200 years, are where some of our nation’s brightest
minds—including Dr. King, a Morehouse graduate—have flourished in
environments dedicated to fostering Black excellence.

Although HBCUs represent 3 percent of colleges and universities, they
graduate 20 percent of African Americans with undergraduate degrees—and 25
percent of African Americans with degrees in STEM.

Yet the [ [link removed] ]average endowment for HBCUs is significantly small, compared to
other top colleges. To put it in perspective, Harvard, which has the
largest endowment of any school in the U.S., has over $10 billion. In
contrast, Howard, the HBCU with the largest endowment, possesses close to
$800 million.

We need to close the gap, and fundraising alone won’t do the trick. That’s
why Congress must increase funding for HBCUs.

[ [link removed] ]Sign if you agree: HBCUs deserve more funding.

More funding for HBCUs means greater opportunities for Black students to
pursue their dreams, so they can then go out and share their gifts with
the world. HBCU grads are paving the way, helping to build an economy that
works for everyone and puts America back on the map as a manufacturing
superpower.

The United States excels because of our higher education system, and HBCUs
are integral to that success. Today, as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr.’s legacy, we must continue to advocate for more funding for HBCUs.

In solidarity,
Ro
