Johh,
Today, we are celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his immense contributions to the civil rights movement. He was a fearless activist who had a dream of an America where we could all enjoy our fundamental rights and live fulfilling lives.
The fundamental rights that are so enmeshed with our country have always been conditional or even nonexistent for Black Americans. No person in the United States should have to fight for justice and equality, yet our history and the news of today prove that there has never been a time when Black Americans have not had to fight for their rights.
In the spirit of Dr. King, we must recognize the deeply shameful history of our country, our own privilege, and work for a better future. While it is most certainly a day to celebrate and mourn the life of an extraordinary man, it can also be a day of decisive action. As Dr King reminded us often, we can all live a life with love and service toward others.
Today, I encourage you to take part in the festivities by amplifying Black voices, buying from Black-owned businesses, donating to racial justice funds, demanding accountability, and uplifting policies that herald equality. It's up to all of us to do our part and commit to building a better future for everyone in the image of Dr. King's dream.
Thank you,
Diana
