Hi John,

Greenpeace is taking the UK government to court for unlawfully approving a new oil and gas licensing round in the North Sea. [1]

Can you join almost a quarter of a million people who have called on the government to say no to new oil and gas?

New North Sea oil and gas will do nothing to bring people’s energy bills down - the only thing it will do is trash the climate. [2] Fossil fuel companies won’t sell the oil and gas to UK households at affordable prices. Instead, they’ll simply sell it to the highest bidder on the international market.

Right now, the quickest thing the UK government could do to tackle the energy crisis is to properly tax fossil fuel companies and use that money to insulate people’s homes and invest in cheap, clean renewables. [3] Doing this would also help tackle the climate crisis.

But instead of grasping the solutions that are right in front of them, the government is pushing ahead with new oil and gas licences. And what’s more, they’ve approved this new licensing round without fulfilling their legal obligation to properly check what impact it would have on the climate.

They failed completely to check how much CO2 would end up in the atmosphere from burning the oil and gas. Which basically means they’ve ignored 80% of the emissions these new licences would create. [4]

This is outrageous, immoral, and unlawful. Can you join us in fighting this?

The North Sea has now become the world's highest risk area for oil and gas legal disputes thanks to legal challenges such as this one. [5] The tide is turning, even HSBC is stopping funding new oil and gas developments - it’s time for our government to wake up to the reality too. [6]

Make sure you have your say and thanks for everything you do,

Jack
