Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, John!
Today I wanted to take a moment to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King as one of the Founding Fathers of America.
Throughout my life and career, I've often referred to Dr. King's teachings and lessons to guide my leadership. His legacy left our country with the blueprint to make impactful changes to our society that benefits us all.
As we work our way into 2023, we have the opportunity to make momentous changes for our movement. But much like the past, our nation's progress continues to be paused by leaders whose priorities actively go against those of the people — their own constituents. Their efforts to block our change and prioritize profits over people only further support an unjust and racist status quo that disproportionately impacts Black, brown, and poor folks.
I've said it before and I'll say it again — today, and every day moving forward, we must reaffirm our commitment to rebuilding our communities after decades of injustice, brutality, and stagnant leadership. And we have a strong framework of honorable leadership and compassion from Dr. King that we can use to continue moving forward.
But it's crucial that we continue prioritizing and investing in policies that are key in improving the lives of working people. From jobs and education, to decarceration and community support — we have the tools, the people-power, and the vision to make change happen.
We're paving the way for a new generation of grassroots leaders to take the helm and build a stronger, more inclusive democracy that is rooted in love the same way that Dr. King fought for our future today. And I am so honored to have you in this fight with me today.
Peace and love,
Jamaal Bowman
