John, today we
honor and remember Martin Luther King Jr., who tirelessly fought for a
more just and fair society.

But today and everyday, we must do more than make empty promises to fight
for justice. Here are some of my priorities for addressing racial
injustice and inequality:

We should abolish the Senate filibuster, and if elected to the Senate I’d
be a strong advocate for doing so. The filibuster has time and time again
been used to stop the Senate from passing meaningful civil rights
legislation: pieces like the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and bills that
would have helped get big money out of politics. The filibuster enables
so-called leaders like Mitch McConnell to keep rigging the system against
Black families.

As a consumer protection advocate, I’ve seen how Black families are preyed
upon by predatory lenders and how we can use policy to stop bad actors. In
Congress I’ve worked to hold these bad actors accountable. Our economy
doesn’t work for too many Black families, and I’ll continue to fight
special interests and big corporations that make it hard for people to get
ahead.

There’s so much work to be done. Onward,

Katie Porter
