Dear John,
On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a civil rights icon who lived his life in service to others. Dr. King dedicated his life to the social, political, and economic elevation of all people through collective nonviolent action.
Dr. King was a champion for some of the most significant legislation of our time such as the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which banned racial discrimination in voting practices and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, and national origin.
As your Congresswoman, I am pleased to be a cosponsor of the Voting Rights Advancement Act, the For the People Act, and the Strength in Diversity Act, legislation that builds on the work of Dr. King.
Dr. King was a truly great individual devoted to serving the American people, pushing us to live up to our full potential as individuals and as a country.
This Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, I am reflecting on his famous words, “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.” These words remind us that like Dr. King, each of us has an opportunity to impact our communities and those around us through service.
Today, let us remember Dr. King and honor his legacy with action.
Let us make it a day on, not a day off.
