‌John,

Today is Martin Luther King Day, and I wanted to share a few thoughts and words as we come together to reflect on the legacy of a preacher who lived the words of Saint Francis: “Preach the gospel at all times. When necessary, use words.”

For his part, Dr. King said that "change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability." Forward progress only comes with consistent, intentional action. Change will never come about if we sit back and allow others to carry the burden of labor; our actions have power, and even a kind helping hand to our fellow human beings makes a difference.

Today, there are still those in our country who are fighting for basic rights and the privilege to enjoy the American dream. From lack of access to health care to injustice at the ballot box, the work is far from over.

Dr. King had a dream, and that dream can only be realized when we come together and work in service and in the name of justice. As we continue to navigate the challenges of today, we must live in accordance with Dr. King's legacy of action. We must recognize that we still have a long way until we realize his dream.

Thank you,

Chris Coons
