Today — and every day — we honor and commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr and the commitment to justice, radical truth-telling, and radical love.

Earlier this week, I was proud to attend the historic unveiling of The
Embrace, a brand new monument commemorating Dr. King, Coretta Scott King —
his devoted wife, trusted confidant, advisor, effective strategist and
activist in her own rite — and their shared history in Boston.

It was a moment that spurred reflection on the enduring legacy of Dr. King
and Coretta.

Dr. King was a spiritual and moral leader, scholar, and thought leader, an
early architect of the Civil Rights movement, yet too often, especially in
January, his legacy is reduced to that of a peaceful protester with a
dream.

When the whole truth is, Dr. King was a proud and unapologetic Black man.
A prophetic preacher and a radical dreamer with a bold vision and desire
for revolutionary change.

Dr. King’s vision was a radical one, considered bold for the times, full
inclusion, equity, a redistribution of wealth and resources, and voting
rights. In word and deed, he sought to affirm that Black Lives Matter.

And with all that was thrown his way, he still led with love. He led with
Love for the movement. With love for our people. With love for Coretta.

Dr. King and Coretta — two brilliant, conscious, progressive, people
aligned in the shared purpose of justice, who prayed together, marched,
rallied, boycotted, and sacrificed with intention and urgency — gifted us
with a radical dream and a disruptive blueprint for change.

And now, it is our opportunity, our responsibility, and our duty to carry
on their legacy in our ongoing struggle for equity and justice for all.

In solidarity,

Ayanna Pressley
