It’s time to finish Dr. King’s work
John, “It is easy to conceive of a plan to raise the minimum wage and thus in a single stroke extract millions of people from poverty,” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote. “But between the conception and the realization there lies a formidable wall.” With your help, Prosperity Now is dedicated to scaling that “formidable wall” in one generation. The work is not easy. Dr. King said that depressed living standards for Black Americans “are a structural part of the economy.” But it is possible, and we know how to do it. - The expanded Child Tax Credit lifted 3.7 million children out of poverty during the pandemic. Now, we’re advocating to make this change permanent.
- We helped low-income workers keep $2.8 billion in one year with our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Now, we’re working to expand VITA sites so more families can benefit.
- More states are following Connecticut's lead and working towards implementing the Baby Bonds policy innovation we champion, which creates a nest egg for children in low-income families so they can start adulthood with a real chance to pursue their dreams. Now, we’re working to replicate and perfect the Baby Bonds model and push for widespread adoption.
At Prosperity Now, we’re working to address the same structural racism in the economy that Dr. King called out. That’s why we’re advocating for systemic change at scale, so that all communities and all families can save for the future, start businesses, and create generational wealth.
It’s time to finish the work of the Civil Rights Movement. It’s time to create an economy that is just, fair, and free from systemic racism. Thank you for being part of this powerful movement.
