Dear John,
Today we commemorate the birth of Martin Luther King Jr., born 94 years ago, just a few hours south of Knoxville. The grandson of sharecroppers and clergy, he was born into an America rife with division, hatred and state sanctioned violence against its Black population. Yet guided by his family, his conscience and his faith, Dr. King became a universal embodiment of courage, perseverance, dignity and service. His invocation for racial equality and economic justice continues to inspire us to empower the disenfranchised and lift up our most vulnerable.
