Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen just announced that the federal government will hit the limit on total federal debt on January 19, just four days from now.

After that, the Treasury Department will be forced to take “extraordinary measures” to avoid defaulting on the debt, which would likely trigger a global financial crisis.

Congress could defuse this bomb by simply raising the debt limit, as it has dozens of times under presidents of both parties for decades. But the MAGA radicals now in control of the House of Representatives are refusing to raise the debt ceiling unless President Biden agrees to devastating cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and other key programs.

They are threatening to cause an economic catastrophe in order to force deeply damaging, and unpopular, cuts. We must act now to make sure Republicans don’t get away with it.

Inequality Media is creating a series of viral videos, social media graphics, and other content to sound the alarm and educate everyday Americans about the debt ceiling and what’s truly at stake.

In order to mobilize the political pressure needed to protect Social Security and Medicare, we need to accomplish two things:

1. Educate the American people about the debt ceiling. The corporate media does an awful job explaining the debt ceiling. We need to make sure people understand that raising the debt ceiling doesn’t increase spending or the federal debt. It simply allows the government to pay bills it has already taken on — and defaulting on the debt would be catastrophic.
2. Mobilize people to take action before Republicans drive the economy off a cliff. We’ve seen how reckless and dangerous these MAGA Republicans are. We need to start putting pressure on Republicans — especially those who represent Biden districts — to join with Democrats to pass a clean debt ceiling increase before the likes of Matt Gaetz, Lauren Boebert, and Marjorie Taylor Greene drive the economy off a cliff.

That’s not an easy task, but this is a fight that Inequality Media was made for.
