John,
Right out of the gate, the first priority for House Republicans was to push forward with a dangerous plan to cripple the IRS's ability to enforce our tax laws. Their goal? Defund the IRS and protect wealthy and corporate tax cheats at the expense of middle-class Americans.
The bill cutting $80 billion in new IRS funding allocated in the Inflation Reduction Act passed the House in a party line vote. Every Democrat voted against it and Republicans gave themselves a standing ovation upon passage.
Listen, this specific bill doesn’t have a chance in the U.S. Senate, but it’s the beginning of what will be a two year assault on IRS funding by House Republicans that could lead to death by a thousand cuts for a lot, possibly all, of this funding over time.
Republicans will stop at nothing to protect ultra-wealthy criminal tax cheats, especially when doing it will reduce the revenue needed to fund critical government programs like Medicaid, school lunches, and environmental protections.
That’s why we need to be clear in sending a message to the Senate: Reject every single House Republican plan to defund the IRS and protect wealthy and corporate tax cheats.
This push -- and the next one and the one coming after that -- by House Republicans to repeal vital funding for IRS modernization would greatly weaken the Biden administration’s power to enforce tax laws against the ultra-wealthy and tax-avoiding corporations.
Previous Republican cuts have already led to a drastic decline in audit rates of millionaires and billionaires by 71% and large corporations by 54% leading to over $120 billion in lost revenue.
This is a brazen attack on the principle of tax fairness. We cannot stand by and watch Republicans keep their donors from paying their fair share.
The future of our country depends on our nation's ability to maintain a fair and just tax system. Tell the Senate: Reject House Republicans’ plan to defund the IRS and protect wealthy and corporate tax cheats.
Thank you for demanding Senate Democrats stand strong to defeat any MAGA Republican House bill that defunds the IRS.
