John, I just wrapped up my first two weeks (and first week officially sworn-in as your Congressman) in Washington, and I’m finally getting settled in. After spending week one observing the chaotic fight for House Speaker amongst the far-right factions of the GOP, I was thrilled to finally get to work on behalf of the people of NM-02. I introduced my first bill to prevent House members from receiving pay until a speaker is elected in the future. I also voted against the extremists’ proposed rules package that would gut government ethics and oversight, further attack women’s reproductive choice, and give more tax breaks to wealthy corporations. Additionally, this rules package would set New Mexico up for failure by threatening critical defense funding, including funding for NM’s Holloman Air Force Base, and attacks Social Security and Medicare, hurting our seniors.
Now, I’m heading back to NM-02 this week to meet with constituents across the district and hear directly from them about our challenges and opportunities. The work is just getting underway, and I’m so grateful you chose me to do it. Viva NM-02! — Gabe
