Once again our democracy is being tainted, John:

A majority of Pennsylvania’s 16,000 canceled mail ballots were from Democrats -- The Philadelphia Inquirer

More than 16,000 Pennsylvanians who voted by mail last November were disenfranchised — and more than two-thirds were Democratic voters. Many don't even know their vote was not counted.

It turns out that when you change the rules less than a week before the election to throw out otherwise eligible votes for not having an unnecessary date on the envelope, it has consequences.

This is exactly the kind of nonsense we’re talking about when we say the PA GOP is obsessed with suppressing the Commonwealth’s voters. Will you make a donation of $10 today to help us fight back against voter suppression and provide the civic education needed to make sure voters are informed?

Remember: Until shortly before the election, both state and federal courts had ruled mail-in ballots without dates should be counted.

Republicans were pushing a baseless requirement of including the dates on the grounds of “security and secrecy,” which clearly violated The Civil Rights Act’s prohibition against disenfranchising voters for minor, immaterial errors.

Then, in October, the extremist U.S. Supreme Court ruled the federal court decision moot. Less than a week before the election, Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court followed it with a 3-3 ruling saying the ballots should not be counted — with no reasoning given.

That is why it is up to us, John, a voting rights organization, to stand up against suppressing voters and to not only expand the electorate but also civically engage, educate and mobilize Pennsylvania’s youth, immigrants, Black, Indigenous, and other people of color. Will you pitch in $10 or whatever you can right now to help us keep up our work to defend our democracy against blatant voter suppression like this?

The New Pennsylvania Project was founded in May 2021 to expand Pennsylvania’s electorate, so it reflects the Commonwealth’s demographically changing population. In the next four years, NPP will engage and empower young residents and those living in underrepresented immigrant communities and communities of color. We register communities to vote, provide civic education about the issues that matter in their neighborhoods, and mobilize Pennsylvanians to vote in every election.
