National call: Tribute to Marshall, guest from Better Angels, take
action

Our January call was the first since CCL Founder Marshall Saunders
passed away, and some time was spent remembering and honoring him.
Toward the end of the call, CCL Director of Administration and Human
Resources Susan Higgins gave a tour of Marshall's office, the walls of
which were adorned with pictures of CCL staff and volunteers over the
years, as well as a quote from Gandhi that was taped to his door. Sam
Daley-Harris, founder of RESULTS and a mentor of Marshall, paid a loving
tribute, sharing some of the op-ed he'd written

for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Our guest this month was John Wood Jr. with Better Angels, an
organization dedicated to reducing the political polarization in our
country. His advice: "Love and empathy are disarming, and therefore
strategically effective." The interview with John starts at 1:37 in the
recording

Rep. Clarke touts H.R. 763 in The Hill op-ed

Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Vice Chair of the House Energy and Commerce
Committee, is also a cosponsor of the Energy Innovation Act. Last week,
she published on op-ed in The Hill about the need for bold action on
climate change that mentioned her support for H.R. 763:

"This urgent need for bold and transformative action is why I am also
supportive of market-based policies that put a price on carbon emissions
to incentivize cleaner technologies, such as the Energy Innovation and
Carbon Dividend Act (H.R.763). "

We crushed our year-end fundraising goal

As you might already know, we surpassed our year-end fundraising goal of
$500,000 with flying colors. The thermometer hit $500,000 on December 24
and then ultimately $851,323 to ring in the new year!

Funding from this campaign will allow us to begin this year with our
volunteer training and support programs fully funded. This is an
incredible win for our grassroots climate work, and we look forward to
strengthening our efforts in the next year.

Many of you stretched your personal giving in order to make this
fundraiser so successful. And this year, 170 of you created Facebook
Fundraisers to help leverage support from friends and family, which
brought in over $60,000.

Thank you for your donations and for everything else you give to this
cause, including your valuable time, energy, and talents. We continue to
be deeply inspired by your generosity and energized by your commitment
to a livable planet. Let's make 2020 a groundbreaking year for
bipartisan climate solutions in Congress!

Media: LTE inspired by CCL's approach

CCL Boulder volunteer Melinda Coleman lives in a house divided — she
being a progressive and her husband a conservative. She thought their
differences might lead to divorce, but after seeing CCL's approach of
engaging people with whom we disagree, she saw she could apply the same
thing to her marriage. In a letter in the Longmont (CO) Times-Call

[link removed]

, she related her story about a conversation with CCL volunteer Daniel
Palken:

"Daniel suggested, ‘If you two can find common ground, there's hope for
the rest of us.' One of the seven values of CCL is relationships: ‘We
listen, we work to find common values, and we endeavor to understand our
own biases.'.. If you think that the country will never heal, it may
give you a small bit of hope to know that my husband and I are making
progress."

Her letter was a great introduction to CCL for readers, as it shared
both our policy and our values as an organization.

CCL volunteers are regularly activating the " five levers
