Hi John,

Happy New Year! I hope you were able to take time to rest and relax with family and friends over the holidays. While we’re emerging fully from the pandemic, 2022 was still tough, particularly with the November election here in Texas. The holidays were a great time to recharge and reconnect.

Before the holiday season, our leadership team met to layout our priorities for 2023 — Mothers Against Greg Abbott has a VERY big year ahead of us.

Our focus for 2023:

  • Supporting and expanding our chapters

  • Identifying and expanding precinct chairs within our membership

  • Initiating a billboard campaign to hold Texas GOP accountable

  • Impacting the 2023 Legislative Session - phone calls, emails, member visits

  • Identifying and supporting vulnerable school board races in the upcoming May 2023 election

We’re already gearing up for the 2023 Legislative session. We have several volunteers tracking bills on LGBTQ issues, Voting rights, Women’s rights, Climate, Gun Safety, Public Education, and more. We plan to engage on bills we strongly oppose and those that we support. In addition, this session there is a $33B surplus that our representatives will decide how to spend.

When the time comes, we will need your help in contacting representatives so you can tell them how you feel about the bills and how the surplus should be spent.

We are committed to fighting for Texas families!

Chapter Member Benefits

With your help, our team has been able to achieve really great things. Prior to the November election, we were able to fund 50+ videos, 25 billboards, and 2.5M texts to voters. Mothers Against Greg Abbott was a truly powerful force in Texas thanks to all of you. And so much of what we do is powered by volunteers — but that still requires funding to get it all done.

To continue to make a difference for Texas, Mothers Against Greg Abbott needs sustaining members to help power the changes we all want for our families.

To that end, we’re launching our new membership program! You can click here to become a sustaining member. Send any questions to [email protected]. And please sign up today to support our grassroots effort!

Opening Day @ #TxLege

The 88th Texas Legislative session opened on Tuesday, January 10th. All 150 Texas House members and 31 Texas Senators were sworn in. In addition, the Texas Senators drew lots to see which ones would have a 2-year or 4-year term. See how your Senator fared, here.

Looking at the faces, it’s clear the legislature is overwhelming white and male (70% white and 54% male). It’s much less diverse than the state as a whole. But, now almost a third (54 of 181) of the legislators are women. And the first two Muslims to serve as Texas legislators were sworn in on Tuesday - Rep Salman Bhojani and Rep Suleman Lalani. Diversity and representation matter. The lack of both continues to drive bad policy in Texas.

Nancy was there too and saw many of the candidates we were supporting in the Fall - those that won and several who didn’t. We’ll continue to partner to make a difference. #txlege

50th Anniversary of Roe v Wade

On January 22, 2023, as we mourn the loss of nearly 50 years of constitutional protections, we send another clear message:

Our movement is strong.
Our movement is
growing.
Our movement is
Bigger than Roe.

Join Mothers Against Greg Abbott at the Texas Capitol on Sunday, January 22 from noon to 2PM for a sit-in.

This event is not a formally planned event. We’ll be going back to the basics with picketing & sitting-in. Please bring: signs, plenty of water, and snacks.

In addition to the sit-in, we have launched the Activist Bookclub this month. We have two books to choose from.

You will have an opportunity to meet Robin Marty, author of Handbook for a Post-Roe America in a webinar on Monday, January 23rd.

And we’ll be interviewing Representative Donna Howard on Tuesday, January 24th. Stayed tuned as we’re planning more events that week!

Save the Date - Lobby Day

We will be descending on the Texas Capitol on May 4th for the second annual Mothers Against Greg Abbott Lobby Day. We are still working through the details, but save the date!!
