Friends, This week, I was back in Washington, DC and our House Republican majority has hit the ground running, delivering on key promises we’ve made to the American people. My sole purpose in Congress is to advocate for and serve Iowans. Last week, I outlined my top priorities in a piece for the Dubuque’s Telegraph Herald. The concerns of Iowans are my main priorities in Congress. You have my word that I will continue to hold the Biden Administration accountable for its failures and work across the aisle to solve the challenges Iowans face every day. You can read the full piece here, and I’ve included an excerpt below. “In November, Iowans rejected the DC way and made clear they wanted a check on the Biden Administration. You have placed your trust in me to be that check – and voice – during an incredibly important and challenging time for our country. I won’t let you down. “I’ve listened to families, farmers, and small businesses in Dubuque and across Northeast Iowa – the concerns Iowans are talking about around their kitchen tables each night are my priorities in Congress. I will hold this Administration accountable for their failures, work across the aisle to solve the challenges we face, and continue to be a fierce advocate for Dubuque. “I’ll continue working to enhance the Child Tax Credit (CTC); I have legislation that will increase this credit up to $4,500 for children five and under, and $3,500 for children aged six to 17 for working parents. This will help families cover the cost of raising children and make life more affordable. Additionally, I’m backing legislation that will make key aspects of the 2017 tax cuts permanent for working families and small businesses. Bottom line: it’s your money, not the government’s money, and amid this inflation mess, it’s even more important that you can keep more of what you earn." The work for Iowa’s Second District is just getting started. My mission for you remains the same: put Iowa first, provide effective and accessible leadership, and make sure Washington works for you, not the other way around. Best, Upcoming Town Hall in Grundy Center I am excited to host my first in-person town hall of 2023 this coming Thursday in Grundy Center! This will be my 21st in-person town hall to hear directly from Iowans and take your unfiltered questions. Time and location details are below -- I look forward to the conversation! Grundy Center Town Hall Thursday, January 19th 11:15 AM Grundy Center Community Center 705 F Ave Grundy Center, IA 50638 The IRS Needs Better Customer Service, Not More Auditors This week, I voted to prevent the hiring of 87,000 new IRS agents by President Biden and then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The IRS should be focused on customer service, not on targeting working Americans. I was proud to help introduce and support legislation to defund the 87,000 new IRS agents hired by President Biden and then-Speaker Pelosi. We should fire this army of auditors and instead ensure the IRS is better using its resources to get through their massive tax return backlog, catch wealthy tax cheats, and improve their failing operations. Keep the Nine Our Founders intentionally created an independent Supreme Court to protect Iowans and Americans from a power-hungry federal government. Now, we’re hearing calls from the Left to pack the court with activist Justices who will legislate from the bench rather than interpret the Constitution as it was written. We must keep our Supreme Court at nine justices to maintain the integrity and independence of our judicial branch. I joined my Republican colleagues in calling for Congress to adopt the Keep the Nine Amendment to send a powerful message at an important time: we want our judiciary independent, we value our liberties, and we will safeguard our Constitution. Watch my full remarks HERE. Iowa is Moving in the Right Direction: Supporting Governor Reynolds It was an honor to attend Governor Reynolds inauguration this morning! Ahead of the inauguration, Governor Reynolds gave her Condition of the State Address and put forward a bold, conservative action plan to build on the successes of her first term. She has cut taxes, empowered parents, stamped out woke nonsense, and defended our freedoms. The best is yet to come with Governor Reynolds at the helm, and I look forward to working with her to keep Iowa the best place to live, work, and raise a family. Preventing Human Trafficking This week I wore blue to raise awareness for Human Trafficking Awareness Month. This modern day slavery is often happening in our communities and going undetected; we must all work together to stop human trafficking. Learn more about how you can help HERE. Oath of Office I officially signed my oath of office this week, continuing my work for Iowa families, farmers, veterans, and small businesses. It is the honor of a lifetime to serve Iowans. I will work every day to uphold our Constitution and put Iowa first. Medal of Honor Museum It was an honor to meet with Medal of Honor recipients this week. Last Congress, I voted to allow the National Medal of Honor Monument to be built on federal land and I will continue working to honor those who have made great sacrifices in service to our country! Mercy Medical Center It was great to meet with Mercy Medical Center this week in DC and hear about their efforts to provide the best care for their patients in Iowa!
